Study on damage detection for the beams of frame structures using the changes in the mode shape rotational angles of beam-column nodes

Abstract

In order to detect damages of frame beams, a method based on changes in mode rotary angles of beam-column nodes was proposed.Firstly, sensitivity analysis was conducted for mode displacements and rotary angles of frame beams and their sensitivity coefficients were derived.Then, locations of damaged beams were primarily determined according to changes in mode rotary angles of beam-column nodes before and after damage.Furthermore, based on the results of sensitivity analysis, change values in mode rotary angles of beam-column nodes were modified using the iterative algorithm.Finally, locations and levels of damage were identified based on the modified changes in mode rotary angles of beam-column nodes.The validity of the proposed method was verified using a numerical example of a 5-story 3-span frame.
