Application of a three-dimensional FEM-SPH coupling method to projectile motion in a bore

Abstract

The projectile motion in a bore of large-caliber artillery is a highly nonlinear impact dynamics process.By adopting a coupling method of finite element method (FEM) and smooth particles hydrodynamics (SPH) and combining the SPH method to handle large deformation capacity with high efficiency FEM calculation, large deformation bands were discrete by smooth particles, other structures of launch system were modeled with finite element, a relatively overall large-caliber artillery launch dynamics model was established, which considered dynamic mechanical properties and damage behaviors of rotating bands, friction interface characteristics between rotating bands and barrel bore, the Bourdon effect of propellant gas et al.The engraving process and subsequent rectilinear-chamber motion of the projectile was successfully modeled.The superiority and validity of the proposed SPH-FEM coupling method was verified by comparing numerical simulation results with the results of an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian method (ALE) and measurement data from living fire.Change rules of temperature distribution of rotating bands, vibrations of muzzle and motion attitude of projectile were obtained during projectile motion in the bore, which provides a reference for artillery projectile-barrel match design and firing accuracy design.
