Anti-impact performance analysis for circular CFST members with inner circular steel tube

Abstract

A circular concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) member with inner circular steel tube is a new type of composite member, and it placed a small circular steel tube into the circular CFST member concentrically. The concrete was filled into the inner tube as well as the gap between the inner and the outer steel tube. A finite element analysis (FEA) model was developed using ABAQUS to investigate the dynamic responses of the circular CFST member with inner circular steel tube under low velocity transverse impact. The FEA model was verified by the other researchers’ experimental results of CFST members and concrete-filled double skin tubular (CFDST) members, respectively. The FEA model was used to analyze the whole process of dynamic response and the typical failure modes of a circular CFST member with inner circular steel tube under transverse impacting load. The parameters influencing the impact resistance were analyzed. Parameter analysis results show that incremental yielding strength and steel ratio of the outer steel tube can improve the anti-impact performance of this type of composite members effectively while the concrete strength has a little effect on the performance. The strengthened restraints at both ends of the composite members can also improve the impact resistance of this type of members. The composite member will exhibit a relative preferable performance if the diameter ratio of the inner to outer tube of the member is a range from 0.6 to 0.8.
