Tests for flow induced characteristics of a centrifugal pump under air-water two-phase inflow condition

Abstract

A two-phase flow liquid pumping test ring was built in order to study the flow induced characteristics of centrifugal pumps under air-water two-phase inflow condition. Pump performance were measured of a specific speed ns=132.2 centrifugal pump under different flow rate and different inlet air void fraction，pressure pulsation and vibration signal spectrum and their probability density map were also obtained for analyze. The results show that the performance of centrifugal pump is more sensitive to air in small flow condition under air-water two-phase inflow condition. The performance drops sharply when the air void fraction is more than 8%，and the range of data collected is narrower and more disorganized. The maximum air void fraction of model pump could reach 10% when the pump operates normally. The dominant frequency of pump outlet pressure pulsation is still at the blade passing frequency even under air-water two-phase condition. Frequency amplitude increases with the increase of inlet air void fraction. The greater of the inlet air void fraction，the more obvious of the rate of low frequency broadband characteristics. The pressure fluctuation signal and vibration signal are both obey the normal distribution. With the increase of inlet gas content, the probability density function （PDF）amplitude of pressure pulsation decreases gradually，and its amplitude span becomes wider gradually. The corresponding is that the amplitude of the probability density function of vibration increases first，then decreases，and reaches the minimum when the inlet gas content is 5% (which is still greater than that without air)，and then increases. Therefore，the variation law of this two signals with different inlet air void fraction could be used as an important basis for flow monitoring.
