Torsional dynamic response of a pipe pile in heterogeneous saturated soil with a flexible support at pile head

Abstract

An analytical solution is developed to investigate the torsional dynamic response of an end bearing pile embedded in heterogeneous saturated soil with a flexible support at pile head. The torsional dynamic impedances of the outer and inner soil are first solved based on Biot’s motion wave equation and the Novak's thin layer method. The torsional dynamic response and complex dynamic impedance of the pipe pile are then deduced by discretizing the dynamic equation of pipe pile into difference schemes. The results show that the real stiffness of the pile top remains unchanged in the zone of both high and low flexible support parameters n and Mu, and increases gradually in that of middle n and Mu. While the effect of the applied torque T0 at the pile tip is inverse. The dynamic damping presents an approximate normal curve distribution with the variations of n, Mu and T0. With the increase of soil heterogeneity coefficient a, the real stiffness of pile top gradually increases, but the dynamic damping decreases rapidly, and both eventually remain unchanged.
