Meso analysis for effects of structure size on concrete biaxial dynamic failure behavior

Abstract

To investigate the effect of structural size on concrete biaxial dynamic failure behavior, a meso-scale modelling approach considering concrete heterogeneity is established. Numerical simulations of cubic concrete specimens having different sizes under different strain rates (10-5/s, 10-2/s and 1/s) and different lateral stress ratios (0, ±0.25, ±0.50, ±0.75, ±1.00 and -∞) are carried out. The mechanical behavior of concrete under dynamic biaxial compression and biaxial compression-tension loads and the influence of strain rate and lateral stress ratio on the dynamic biaxial strength and the corresponding size effect are studied. The mechanism of the size effect on the dynamic biaxial strength is analyzed and discussed. The simulation results indicated that: (1) under dynamic biaxial compression loads, the size effect on dynamic biaxial compressive strength is gradually weakened with the increasing strain rate, and the size effect is first weakened and then strengthened with the increasing lateral stress ratio; (2) under dynamic biaxial compression-tension loads, the size effect on dynamic spindle compressive strength and dynamic lateral tensile strength are both weakened with the increasing strain rate, the size effect on dynamic spindle compressive strength is enhanced with the increasing lateral stress ratio, while the size effect on the dynamic lateral tensile strength is weakened; (3) the increasing strain rate will weaken the influence of the lateral stress ratio on the size effect.
