Abstract

The computational cost of the existing optimization methods for the parameters of seismic isolation devicesin practical engineering project would dramatically become higher if the number of parameters increases. Meanwhile, some of the previous relevant studies only select one response parameter of structural components as the optimization target, which usually leads to limited optimized outcomes. Along these lines, the repair costs of the bridge under the E2 level earthquake are taken as the optimization goal, and the response surface method which can improve the search efficiency of the optimization is used to optimize the design parameters of the seismic isolation devices. Firstly, the component-based seismic loss assessment method and the response surface method combined with the central composite design were introduced. Secondly, a continuous skew girder bridge equipped with rubber bearings and cable-sliding modular expansion joints was taken as a case-study, and its numerical model was built using OpenSees platform. Then the ground motions matching the standard response spectra were selected as input, and the bearing stiffness, the slack length of the cable as well as the cable stiffness were optimized according to the proposed parameter optimization method. Finally, skew bridge models with cable-sliding modular expansion joints and ordinary modular expansion joints with different skew angles were established, and the damping effects of the cable-sliding modular expansion jointwere comparatively assessed. Results show that the proposed optimization method has high calculation efficiency and accuracy. The seismic repair cost of skew bridges is most affected by the stiffness of bearings, followed by the slack length of the cable, and the cable stiffness. The installation of the cable-sliding modular expansion joints could balance the damage of bearings and abutments, as a result, the bridge repair costs are significantly reduced. Repair costs of skew bridges with ordinary modular expansion joints increase with the increase of the skew angle while the losses of the oneswith cable-sliding modular expansion joints are less affected by the skew angle.
