Uniaxial mechanical characteristics of rocks cut and crushed by high-pressure abrasive water jet

Abstract

Changes of mechanical parameters of rocks cut by the abrasive water jet have important influence on the subsequent breakage of rocks. Three selected rock samples, i.e., sandstone, limestone and granite, were firstly cut by the high-pressure abrasive water jet (AWJ) on the water jet cutting platform. Three dimensional breakage forms of rock samples were gained with the help of CT scanning technics. Then, the mechanical response of rock samples cut by AWJ was analyzed according to uniaxial compression tests. It’s revealed that the majority of rock samples moving-cut by AWJ take on the regular slot shape while most of rock samples impacted by AWJ take on breaking holes. The damage degree of former breaking pattern inside rock is much larger than that of latter. The cutting action of AWJ causes the uniaxial compression crushing form shift to broken type, and this tendency get obvious with the increase of cutting length. However, the stress-strain trend of rock sample keeps unchanged before and after AWJ impacting/cutting. What’s more, the uniaxial compressive strength as well as the Poisson's ratio of rock sample approx. linearly decreases with the increasing of jet pressure and cutting length. The results of this paper could provide some basic theory for the applications of AWJ slotting coal seam.
