Effects of rivet arrangement on strength of lap joint and its optimization design

Abstract

To address the issue of the effect of rivet arrangement on the strength of riveted lap joints, the failure mode and failure mechanism of riveted lap joints were first studied by LS-DYNA. Secondly, the effects of the number of rivets, rivet rows, rivet arrangement and rivet row spacing on the lap joint strength were studied using the peak load as the index, and the effects of rivet spacing and rivet edge distance on the lap joint strength were studied using the linear load concentration. A mechanical model is also developed to study the stresses on multiple rows of rivets. Finally, the rivet arrangement is optimized based on the Response Surface Methodology. The results show that when multiple rivet lines are used, the outer rivet line with more rivets will break first due to high stress concentration, and the rivet arrangement should be arranged in a way that there are more rivets in the middle and fewer rivets on both sides. When the total rivet strength is greater than the residual strength of the plate, the number of rivets and rivet rows have limited effect on the lap joint strength, which mainly affects the damage form of the lap joint member. The response surface optimization results show that the lap joint strength is highest when the edge spacing = 3.4d, rivet spacing = 5.3d, and row spacing = 3.4d. The research results are of great significance to the strength improvement of the riveted structures of aircraft.
