Screed vibration compaction characteristics and paving density control method

Abstract

To control paving density and improve asphalt mat uniformity, vibration compaction system composed of screed and asphalt mat was analyzed. The Fourier series was used to express tamper excitation on the vibrating mechanism. Tamper inertia force was considered and reaction force of tamper on the screed was obtained, screed vibration model with tamper excitation and vibration excitation was established; Based on screed vibration model, the influence of vibration frequency, asphalt mat natural frequency and damping ratio on the screed amplitude was analyzed. Relation between paving density and screed amplitude was established. Control method of paving density was proposed. The screed vibration model and paving density control method were verified by experiments. The results show that: Based on the vibration screed model in which tamper and asphalt mat are periodically contacted and separated, screed acceleration spectrum includes the vibration frequency, the tamper frequency and second harmonic component. The simulation results are consistent with the field test; When paving material is AC25, screed amplitude and asphalt mat density increase with vibration frequency from 10Hz to 35Hz;By adjusting screed vibration frequency, asphalt mat density can be controlled and asphalt mat quality is improved.
