A study on technique for testing dynamic tensile properties of carbon/carbon composites at elevated temperatures

Abstract

This paper described the elevated temperature dynamic tensile testing system developed for measuring carbon/carbon composites. A current heating device was applied to heat the sample to achieve the elevated temperature environment required for the test in rotating flywheel-impact split Hopkinson tensile bar(SHTB), and a water-cooling device was also applied to control temperature. All units above were integrated to form an elevated temperature dynamic tensile testing system for carbon/carbon composites. The numerical simulation of samples with different sizes was conducted to analysis the influence on temperature uniformity in sample, which helped to determine sample dimension. Based on the developed system, the dynamic tensile stress-strain curves of carbon/carbon composites at room temperature to 1300℃ were obtained. The test results showed that failure stress and strain of tested material decreased as temperature increase. The established elevated temperature dynamic tensile test system could be used for testing the dynamic tensile mechanical properties of carbon/carbon composites at elevated temperature.
