Effects of rail short wave corrugation on power generationperformance of rail vibration energy harvester

Abstract

The influence of short-pitch rail corrugation on the power generation performance of a rail vibration energy harvester is studied based on the theories of the wheel-rail friction self-excited vibration and the feedback vibration of corrugated irregularity. A numerical model of the wheel-rail-vibration absorber system which considered the short-pitch rail corrugation is established to simulate the rail vibration. The power generation performance analysis of rail vibration energy harvester is carried out based on this wheel-rail-vibration absorber model. The analysis results show that the amplitudes of wheel-rail contact force and vertical vibration acceleration of rail surface increases with the increasing of the rail corrugation depth, and the rail corrugation depth does not affect the main vibration frequency of the rail. With the increase of the rail corrugation wavelength, the oscillation amplitudes of the wheel-rail contact force and the vertical vibration acceleration of rail surface increase first and then decrease. The main vibration frequency of the rail decreases with the increasing of the rail corrugation wavelength. The depth and wavelength of rail corrugation have significant effects on the power generation performance of the rail vibration energy harvester. The output power of energy harvester increases with the increasing of the rail corrugation depth when the rail corrugation wavelength is fixed. With the increase of the rail corrugation wavelength (depth is fixed), the output power of energy harvester increases first and then decrease. Moreover, the energy value of wavelet packet obtained by using wavelet packet decomposition method is almost linearly related to the rail corrugation wavelength. To sum up, the rail vibration energy harvester can effectively monitor the generation process of rail corrugation and predict the approximate wavelength of rail corrugation, and it is beneficial for improving the energy recovery efficiency of rail vibration.
